Psychotherapy, Psychology, and Psychiatry: What’s the Difference?

When exploring mental health care, it’s helpful to understand the key differences between psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy. Each plays an important role in supporting mental health—but they offer different types of services and qualifications.

Psychology

Psychologists are licensed mental health professionals who hold advanced graduate degrees (such as a PhD or PsyD). They specialize in:
  • Psychological testing and assessments
  • Diagnosing mental health conditions
  • Providing psychotherapy (talk therapy)
  • Research and behavioral science
Some psychologists may focus solely on testing and evaluations, while others provide therapy. In most states, psychologists cannot prescribe medication.

Psychiatry

Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MD or DO) who specialize in mental health. They can:
  • Prescribe and manage medication
  • Diagnose mental health disorders
  • Provide psychotherapy (though many focus primarily on medication management)
  • Offer specialized medical interventions
Psychiatrists are the appropriate providers for clients seeking medication management, complex diagnostic evaluations, or treatment that requires medical oversight.

Psychotherapy (AKA Talk Therapy)

Psychotherapy—also known as talk therapy—is a collaborative, evidence-based treatment that helps individuals understand emotions, change patterns, and build coping skills. Psychotherapy can be provided by:
  • Licensed professional counselors (LPC, LPCC)
  • Licensed clinical social workers (LCSW, LICSW)
  • Licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT)
  • Psychologists (PhD, PsyD)
  • Other licensed mental health clinicians
Therapists focus on improving mental well-being through structured conversations, strategies, and support—not medication.

If You Need Medication or Other Services

If you believe you need medication management, psychological testing, or services outside the scope of psychotherapy, we recommend:
  • Contacting your primary care provider (PCP) for a referral
  • Checking your insurance directory for in-network psychiatrists or psychologists
  • Using online directories
These resources can help you find a psychiatrist or psychologist who offers the specific services you're looking for.
